ABOUT LADAKH
Nothing quite prepares the traveler for the completely ethereal yet harsh beauty of Ladakh. Ladakh is often called 'Little Tibet' and because it lies north of the Himalaya's, it receives little rainfall. The landscape is dramatic with large Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, villages formed by flat-topped mud-brick houses, snow-capped mountains and grand vastness.
Ladakh means "land of high passes", and is a region in the Indian Administered Jammu and Kashmir that currently extends from the Kuen Lunmountain range to the main Great Himalayas to the south, inhabited by people Indo –Aryan and Tibetan descent. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir and its culture and history are closely related to that of Tibet. Rock carvings found in many parts of Ladakh indicate that the area has been inhabited from Neolithic times.
